Traditional Aikido was first taught in Azerbaijan in the early 1990s. The founder of Aikido in Azerbaijan is Sensei Farhad Aleskerov. In the early 1990s, Sensei Farhad Aleskerov founded the first Aikido Dojo in Azerbaijan in Baku and began teaching. On June 30, 1992, the first Aikido organization in Azerbaijan, the Aikido Center, was registered with the Ministry of Justice. The first public organization created for Aikido in Azerbaijan was the Aikido Federation of Azerbaijan. The Federation was registered with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan on July 13, 1994. The President of the Federation is Sensei Farhad Aleskerov. The leaders and coaches of other Aikido organizations created and operating in Azerbaijan to this day are graduates of the Federation. The President of the Federation, Sensei Farhad Aleskerov, is also the Technical Director of the Federation and the Head of the Azerbaijan Aikido Center. Sensei Farhad Aleskerov was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Coach of the Republic of Azerbaijan”. In 2011, the Azerbaijan Aikido Federation completely severed ties with Aikido Hombu Dojo, the successor of the founder of Aikido O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba, the Aikikai Foundation, the World Headquarters of Aikido and began private activities in the national style of Aikido. When the Ministry of Youth and Sports re-accredited federations in 2012, the Azerbaijan Aikido Federation did not pass accreditation and lost its status as a federation. Despite this, the Azerbaijan Aikido Federation, in accordance with the legislation, retains the name of the federation in the state registration with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan and continues its activities.

Currently, there are 3 (three) Aikido Organizations operating in Azerbaijan, which are members of the Aikikai Foundation World Aikido Headquarters. These organizations are the Azerbaijan Aikikai Aikido Clubs Public Union (Chairman Ilham Guliyev 5th Dan), the Azerbaijan Sakura Aikido School Limited Liability Company (Director Tural Suleymanli 3rd Dan) and the Azerbaijan Mugenryu Kobudo Sports Club Public Union (Chairman Bakhtiyar Zeynalov 4th).
